The “Into the Unjust” update for Helldivers 2 introduced a slew of new challenges for players, none more controversial than the new mission type: Conduct Mobile Substance Extraction. This mission, often referred to as the GATER mission, tasks Helldivers with escorting a mobile oil rig to various drilling sites. It has quickly earned a reputation among the community as one of the most difficult and frustrating operations, often ending in sudden, unexpected failure.

What Makes the GATER Mission So Difficult?

The core challenge of the GATER mission lies in its unique fail condition. Unlike other missions where success depends on your ability to hold a position or eliminate enemies, this operation is tied directly to the survival of the Ground All-Terrain Extraction Rig itself. If the GATER is destroyed, the entire mission—and by extension, the operation—is a failure. This creates a high-stakes, high-stress scenario, especially on higher difficulties.

The GATER is slow, cumbersome, and, most importantly, vulnerable. It can be destroyed by a variety of hazards, including enemy attacks, being crushed by larger enemies, or even getting launched into the air by a massive enemy like the new Hive Lord. Its durability is a major point of contention within the community; without a visible health bar or the ability to be repaired, players are often left guessing how much damage it can take before it’s too late. The lack of a repair mechanic, which many players hope will be added in a future update, adds to the sense of helplessness when the rig starts taking damage.

New Threats, New Strategies

The GATER mission is made even more challenging by the new enemies introduced in the “Into the Unjust” update, particularly the Hive Lord. This colossal, burrowing Terminid can emerge from the ground and instantly destroy the GATER by ramming into it or launching it into the air. Dealing with the Hive Lord is a top priority, as its presence alone can be an instant operation killer.

Successful completion of the GATER mission requires a shift in strategy. Unlike other missions where a run-and-gun approach works, this operation demands careful planning, coordination, and a defensive mindset.

  • Lure Away the Heavy-Hitters: One of the most effective strategies involves designating one or more Helldivers to act as a distraction, luring the massive Hive Lord and other heavy enemies away from the GATER. The rest of the squad can then focus on clearing the path and defending the rig from smaller, but still dangerous, swarms.
  • Defensive Stratagem Loadouts: A team dedicated to a GATER mission should prioritize defensive and area-denial Stratagems. Sentry Turrets, especially the Autocannon Sentry, are invaluable for taking down armored enemies. Orbital Gatling Barrage and Eagle Airstrikes are excellent for crowd control and dealing with incoming swarms.
  • Teamwork and Communication: This mission is a true test of teamwork. A well-coordinated squad can have one player driving the GATER while the others clear the path and protect the vehicle. Communication is key, as a stray airstrike or a poorly-timed turret can accidentally destroy the rig.

Despite the frustration, the GATER mission is a testament to Arrowhead’s commitment to creating dynamic and challenging gameplay experiences. It forces players to adapt, experiment with new tactics, and truly work together as a squad. While the GATER may be a fragile piece of machinery, the rewards for successfully completing this mission are well worth the effort and frustration.
