Originally announced in 2019 by Hardsuit Labs with the original game’s writer, Brian Mitsoda, at the helm, the project quickly ran into trouble. Mitsoda and the creative director were let go, and in 2021, a “change was needed,” leading to the project being taken over by The Chinese Room, a studio known for its narrative-driven walking simulators like Dear Esther and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. This change in leadership also came with a significant change in the game’s direction, with the new team aiming for a more “spiritual successor” than a direct sequel, focusing more on a linear, cinematic experience rather than a traditional open-world RPG. This was a move that divided the fanbase, with many concerned that the new game would not have the same level of freedom and choice that made the original so special.

Release Date and The New Kindred Experience

After a number of indefinite delays, the game is now scheduled for a full release on October 21, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. It is being developed in Unreal Engine 5, which promises a visually stunning and atmospheric take on the city of Seattle. The game will put players in the shoes of Phyre, an Elder vampire who awakens from a century-long torpor in a modern world they don’t recognize. As Phyre, players will navigate the complex political landscape of vampire society in Seattle while also dealing with a mysterious voice in their head, a Malkavian detective named Fabien, who can also be a playable character in certain flashback segments. This dual-protagonist approach is a unique and exciting change, allowing for two very different perspectives on the game’s story and lore.

  • A Semi-Customizable Protagonist: Phyre is a pre-established character with a fixed backstory, a departure from the “blank slate” protagonist of the original. However, players will have some control over her personality and dialogue choices, which will influence her relationships with the city’s inhabitants.
  • Clan Choice: At the start of the game, players will choose from one of the core clans: the Brujah, the Tremere, the Banu Haqim, or the Ventrue. The two other clans, the Toreador and the Lasombra, are available as paid DLC, a decision that has been criticized by a part of the fanbase.

  • Supernatural Combat: The combat system is built around your chosen clan’s unique disciplines. For example, a Tremere can boil enemies’ blood from a distance, while a Brujah can use their brute strength to charge into a group of enemies and control the flow of a fight.
  • Environmental Traversal: Phyre’s status as an Elder vampire gives her an impressive level of supernatural agility and speed. Players can glide across rooftops, climb up buildings, and use telekinesis to manipulate objects in the environment, creating a sense of power and freedom that was not present in the original.
  • The Masquerade: The Masquerade, the code that prevents vampires from revealing their true nature to humanity, is a core mechanic. Public use of your powers will fill up a “Masquerade meter,” and if you leave too many witnesses, it can result in a game over, a feature that forces players to think strategically about where and when they feed and use their abilities.

Despite the initial skepticism and the many changes to the game’s original vision, recent hands-on previews have been surprisingly positive. Many critics who have played a few hours of the game have praised its atmosphere, art direction, and visceral combat, even while noting that it is not the traditional RPG many had hoped for.
